Questions we get asked before starting a project.
We work across residential landscape, architecture, renovations, interiors, and outdoor living. Depending on your project, we can work on one component or help develop a design direction for the property as a whole.
No. Landscape architecture is where Orterra began, but Orterra Home is expanding that thinking across the entire residential property, including architectural and interior design services.
Yes. In fact, this is one of the reasons Orterra Home exists. Considering the building, interiors and landscape together can create much stronger connections between spaces.
Considering landscape design from the beginning can influence the location of outdoor areas and how your home performs throughout the day, including shade, views, cooling breezes and privacy. It can also enhance how you feel inside your home, with views to gardens, water features or open spaces creating a greater sense of calm and relaxation.
This is where we can help. We will assess the style, form and condition of your existing home and develop strategies on how to tie an extension in that adds to the home's charm and functionality, enabling the extension to feel like a seamless addition that was always there.
Absolutely. We regularly collaborate with architects, building designers, engineers, builders and other consultants.
Yes. If you already have a builder, we can work with them and provide the design information relevant to our scope.
No. In many cases it is better to establish the design first so that builders can price a clearly defined project.
Not at all.
You don't need to arrive with a finished brief. Part of the design process is helping you understand what you need, what is possible and where your priorities should sit.
We start by assessing the condition, structure and layout of your existing home, as well as what you want to achieve. A renovation can be worthwhile when the existing house has good bones, a location you love and potential to improve its layout, comfort and connection to the outdoors.
We can help you design with your budget in mind. We keep an open discussion with you to ensure that likely cost implications of design changes are discussed throughout the process. The final construction pricing ultimately needs to come from builders and contractors.
That's very common.
Our role isn't simply to draw everything on your wish list. We help you understand what matters most, where compromises could be made and how your budget can be used effectively.
Yes. Sloping sites, existing vegetation, privacy issues, drainage, awkward layouts and other constraints are part of residential design.
A difficult site doesn't necessarily mean a bad site. Sometimes the constraint becomes the thing that makes the design interesting.
It depends on the type and scale of your renovation. In Brisbane, some smaller works may not require council approval, while extensions and structural changes generally will. For example, if you want to extend closer to your front or side boundary, or add a storey, you will need council approval. We can help you understand what approvals are needed and guide you through the process from start to finish.
Where approvals are required, we can help identify the likely requirements. We have a team of specialist consultants we regularly work with to ensure you get the best help and as smooth an approval process as possible. We can coordinate the correct documentation and consultants.
We can design and integrate the pool into the overall landscape and outdoor living design and work with the appropriate pool professionals for the technical requirements around pool builds.
Yes. Contact us and we can determine if we are the right fit or whether a targeted landscape contractor would be appropriate.
Orterra currently works with residential clients across South East Queensland. We have worked on projects from Hervey Bay to Northern New South Wales and Toowoomba, and can consider projects further afield depending on the scope.
Design fees depend on the scale, complexity and level of service required.
Rather than designing a service around a predetermined number of drawings, we first look at what your project actually needs and recommend an appropriate level of design involvement.
Absolutely. We can help design a home that is specific to your living needs and aspirations, whilst adding expertise on improving the performance and livability of your home. We also ensure that your builder produces a high quality build that does not compromise on the design vision we create with you.
This depends on the scale and complexity of your project, the approvals required and how quickly decisions are made. We'll discuss an indicative program with you before starting. We ensure we have clearly defined timeframes and clear communication for your project.
Tell us about your property.
We'll ask a few questions about what you're hoping to achieve, where the property is located, your approximate budget and where you are in the process.
From there, we can recommend the most useful next step and work out the best way for us to help you.
